Torremolinos
Torremolinos was the first "well known" resort of the Costa del Sol and gained a reputation for party going and rowdy holiday makers. Consequently the resort received somewhat bad press which over the years has led to a decline in the popularity of the resort, losing out to its neighbours Benalmadena and Fuengirola. In the last few years the local authorities have made major improvements to the town and its image. With a newly modeled town centre and clean beaches Torremolinos has regained some of the charm of the fishing village it once was. The 9km of beach are busy during the summer, especially among the Spanish families that come to take their annual vacations here every year. Gone are the "party going" holiday makers, nowadays Torremolinos's foregin tourists are mainly retired couples making the most of summer sun, with temperatures often soaring into the 30oC's & 40oC's (85- over 100 F).
There are plenty of beach front cafés (called Chiringuitos) selling fried fish, snacks and refreshments, which is just as well as the walk back from the main beach into the town centre is uphill all the way. When the sun goes down the town still has its fair share of restaurants, which cater for just about every taste, should you not feel like trying typical Andalusian food. There are plenty of bars in ranging from Irish, English, Dutch and German as well as Spanish. If you're looking for nightlcubs then most of the action is now further along the coast in Benalmadena's port or in Puerto Banus, though Torremolinos has become a favourite with the gay community as a place to go out.
Calle San Miguel is a pretty little street lined with small shops and cafés, it provides a glimpse of the old Torremolinos, as a small fishing village, and is worth the walk. There isn't much in the way of museums or national monuments however there is an aquapark for children and "not so small children". There is also an equestrian centre nearby which provides dressage displays, lessons and pony trekking in the hills.
The sea-front promenade at Carihuela is renowned for its fresh fish restaurants, Sundays are especially busy with Spanish families going out for lunch and a stroll along the beach front after a sea food lunch by the sea.
